Custom Research lets admins and managers define their own AI-researched content blocks — described in natural language, rendered as cards, tables, or insight views on Account Plans and Strategies. For the full feature reference, see Custom Research.

Watch the walkthrough

The fastest way to learn the setup is this short walkthrough. It covers building and linking a component end-to-end.
The same video is on the Custom Research product page, alongside the full reference.

Prerequisites

  • Admin or manager role in ShiftUp
  • At least one seller profile to associate the component with
  • Your org has fewer than 5 active custom research blocks (the current cap)

Quick setup

1

Open Components

From the ShiftUp left-hand menu, open Components and click New.
2

Shape the research and intent

In the shaping assistant, describe the research you want ShiftUp to perform and what the output is for. Accept the suggested research, intent, and schema — or edit them directly in the phase editor.
3

Preview

Click Preview to run the component against a sample record. Check extraction confidence and tighten the schema if needed.
4

Save and name it

Click Save. Give the component a name and description and choose where it appears — Account Plans, Strategies, or both.
5

Associate a seller profile

Open Associate and pick at least one seller profile. This unlocks visibility rules and the impact preview.
6

Set visibility

In the component’s Visibility section, choose Always show, All filters match, or Any filter matches per surface, then add filters if needed.
The component now runs each time an associated Account Plan or Strategy is generated or refreshed and renders inline on the record.

Restrict seller profile associations to admins

Admins can lock down which seller profiles a custom research component is associated with. When the restriction is on, only admins can link, unlink, update, or restore associations. Managers can still create and edit component definitions. Use this to keep components managers already built in place while preventing them from changing which seller profiles a component runs against.

Enable the setting

  1. Open the ShiftUp Admin tab.
  2. Go to the Advanced tab.
  3. Choose the App Settings in the menu.
  4. Go to the Custom Research section.
  5. Turn on Limit custom research enablement to admins.
The setting is off by default, which leaves associations open to both admins and managers.

What the setting gates

When enabled, only users with Modify All on Seller Profile (or Modify All Data) can:
  • Link a custom research component to a seller profile.
  • Unlink a component from a seller profile.
  • Change the component or seller profile on an existing association.
  • Undelete a previously removed association.
Managers without those permissions keep their existing access to build, edit, activate, deactivate, and reorder components.

What non-admin managers see

If a manager tries a blocked action from the Manage profiles dialog, ShiftUp cancels the change and shows an admin-only toast that names the specific action (link, unlink, update, or restore) and tells them to ask an admin to update the component’s seller profile access.
